James Spike Candlestick

Light a candle the way the Victorians did. The James Spike Pewter Candlestick stands 205mm tall on a 130mm base, cast in some of the finest British pewter from an antique bronze mould.

Each James Spike candlestick is cast at our Birmingham pewter workshop, using an antique bronze mould. It is sold singly rather than as a pair, which suits its character, since a single candlestick on a bedside table or a writing desk has a different feel to a matched pair on a dining table. It weighs around 500g, properly stable, with the soft glow that only pewter and candlelight together produce.

The design is mid nineteenth century, the kind of candlestick people once carried up to bed when going up to bed still involved an actual flame. The spike is the working part. Rather than a socket, the candle is pressed down onto it, which holds it firm and lets it burn right down without any wax trapping wells. It carries our A. E. Williams touch mark, which makes it a thoughtful gift for housewarmings or anniversaries.

A Pewter Maker picking up an Antique Mould

A E Williams (Est 1779) Ltd is one of Britain's oldest pewter makers, still run by the family that founded it nearly 250 years ago. 


The story began when Thomas Williams started a small workshop making flatware and dishes from his home on the Welsh border, and from there the craft passed down through eight generations of the same family, all the way to Rebecca Johnson, who joined the business in 2015. 


Today we're based at our workshop in Digbeth, Birmingham, where we've been since the early 1970s.

OUR STORY
Pouring molten pewter into a bronze mould

We work from a collection of over 1,500 antique bronze moulds, some of which are centuries old. Many were made by hand long before machine tooling existed, and we still use them today, alongside moulds and skills of our own, to produce pieces with the kind of character that mass production simply can't replicate.
