Scottish Thistle Pocket Watch

Carry Scotland's national emblem in your waistcoat pocket. The Scottish Thistle Pewter Pocket Watch has its thistle motif hand cast in some of the finest British Pewter, then set on the front of the case.

The motif is cast at our Birmingham pewter workshop, then fitted with a reliable quartz movement and a three-year battery. At around 77g it has a properly substantial feel without dragging a waistcoat pocket out of shape. It comes complete with its chain in a leatherette presentation box, a good gift for Burns Night, St Andrew's Day, milestone birthdays, Scottish fathers and grandfathers.

The thistle earned its place with the best origin story of any national flower. As the legend goes, a band of Viking raiders crept up on a sleeping Scottish camp under cover of darkness, only to step barefoot into a patch of thistles. The yelps gave them away. The Scots woke and routed them, so the thistle has been Scotland's emblem ever since.

A Pewter Maker picking up an Antique Mould

A E Williams (Est 1779) Ltd is one of Britain's oldest pewter makers, still run by the family that founded it nearly 250 years ago. 


The story began when Thomas Williams started a small workshop making flatware and dishes from his home on the Welsh border, and from there the craft passed down through eight generations of the same family, all the way to Rebecca Johnson, who joined the business in 2015. 


Today we're based at our workshop in Digbeth, Birmingham, where we've been since the early 1970s.

OUR STORY
Pouring molten pewter into a bronze mould

We work from a collection of over 1,500 antique bronze moulds, some of which are centuries old. Many were made by hand long before machine tooling existed, and we still use them today, alongside moulds and skills of our own, to produce pieces with the kind of character that mass production simply can't replicate.
