Pictish Knotwork Pewter Brooch With Stone

An oval pewter brooch featuring intricate openwork Celtic knotwork and a central faceted amber-colored stone

Pictish Knotwork Pewter Brooch With Stone

Wear a piece of pre-Roman Britain on your lapel. The Pictish Knotwork Pewter Brooch with Stone sets a warm amber stone into the centre of a design taken from surviving Pictish carvings.

Handmade at our Birmingham workshop in some of the finest British Pewter, with the Pictish knotwork picked out in proper relief. It measures 40mm across and weighs around 15g, light enough to sit comfortably on a lapel, scarf or coat collar, substantial enough to feel properly heirloom-quality. It suits anyone with Scottish heritage, history enthusiasts, archaeologists and lovers of pre-Roman British art. It makes a fine present for milestone birthdays too.

The Picts were a confederation of tribes living in what became eastern and northern Scotland, from before the Roman conquest until the tenth century. They spoke their own language, now extinct, worked metal beautifully and left behind heavy silver chains and intricate carved stones, some of which were carried south by raiders. From those surviving designs and drawings, this brooch was drawn up and cast at A. E. Williams.

A Pewter Maker picking up an Antique Mould

A E Williams (Est 1779) Ltd is one of Britain's oldest pewter makers, still run by the family that founded it nearly 250 years ago.

The story began when Thomas Williams started a small workshop making flatware and dishes from his home on the Welsh border, and from there the craft passed down through eight generations of the same family, all the way to Rebecca Johnson, who joined the business in 2015.

Today we're based at our workshop in Digbeth, Birmingham, where we've been since the early 1970s.

OUR STORY
Pouring molten pewter into a bronze mould

We work from a collection of over 1,500 antique bronze moulds, some of which are centuries old. Many were made by hand long before machine tooling existed, and we still use them today, alongside moulds and skills of our own, to produce pieces with the kind of character that mass production simply can't replicate.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

At A E Williams, the materials we work with have been chosen over nearly 250 years of making things properly. Pewter sits at the heart of everything we do, but we also work with slate, glass, leather, and wood — each selected because it brings something the others can't: a different feel, a different occasion, a different kind of beauty.

Whatever you're looking for, every material we use is chosen to last, and to look better for it.
