19" Charger

Handcrafted pewter 19 inch charger plate with polished hammered finish, luxury dining table centrepiece displayed with crystal glassware, silver cutlery, candlelight and elegant floral arrangement

19" Charger

Set the table with something cast from moulds nearly three hundred years old. The 19 Inch Pewter Charger measures 19 inches across and weighs around 3.5kg, gravity cast by hand in some of the finest British Pewter.

The bronze moulds date back to 1729 and have been producing the same charger ever since. Each one is cast at our Birmingham workshop using traditional methods, then finished by hand. It comes in an antique finish as standard, with a bright finish available on request, which is the finish shown in the photograph. Few British workshops still cast at this scale.

To mark the 500th anniversary of King Henry VIII's accession to the throne, this charger was commissioned by Hampton Court Palace and displayed on the top table in the great hall, the spot where Henry VIII himself would have been seated. As provenance for a single piece of British pewter goes, there is not much grander.

Please allow up to four weeks for delivery, given the work involved in producing a piece this size by hand.

A Pewter Maker picking up an Antique Mould

A E Williams (Est 1779) Ltd is one of Britain's oldest pewter makers, still run by the family that founded it nearly 250 years ago.

The story began when Thomas Williams started a small workshop making flatware and dishes from his home on the Welsh border, and from there the craft passed down through eight generations of the same family, all the way to Rebecca Johnson, who joined the business in 2015.

Today we're based at our workshop in Digbeth, Birmingham, where we've been since the early 1970s.

OUR STORY
Pouring molten pewter into a bronze mould

We work from a collection of over 1,500 antique bronze moulds, some of which are centuries old. Many were made by hand long before machine tooling existed, and we still use them today, alongside moulds and skills of our own, to produce pieces with the kind of character that mass production simply can't replicate.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

At A E Williams, the materials we work with have been chosen over nearly 250 years of making things properly. Pewter sits at the heart of everything we do, but we also work with slate, glass, leather, and wood — each selected because it brings something the others can't: a different feel, a different occasion, a different kind of beauty.

Whatever you're looking for, every material we use is chosen to last, and to look better for it.
