Keep Scotland's national emblem to hand. The Two Tone Scottish Thistle Pewter Pocket Watch sets a hand cast thistle against a case that combines warm gold-tone with cooler silver-tone, lifting the motif into relief.

The pewter thistle is cast in some of the finest British Pewter at our Birmingham pewter workshop. A quartz movement with a three-year battery keeps it running. At around 77g it sits substantially in the hand without weighing down a waistcoat pocket. It comes complete with its chain in a leatherette presentation box, a good gift for Burns Night, St Andrew's Day, milestone birthdays, Scottish fathers and grandfathers.

The thistle earned the role rather more dramatically than most national flowers. The legend has Viking raiders sneaking up on a sleeping Scottish camp under cover of darkness, treading barefoot into a patch of thistles, then giving themselves away with yelps loud enough to wake the Scots and lose them the fight. Defended by thorniness alone, the thistle has been Scotland's emblem ever since.

A Pewter Maker picking up an Antique Mould

A E Williams (Est 1779) Ltd is one of Britain's oldest pewter makers, still run by the family that founded it nearly 250 years ago. 


The story began when Thomas Williams started a small workshop making flatware and dishes from his home on the Welsh border, and from there the craft passed down through eight generations of the same family, all the way to Rebecca Johnson, who joined the business in 2015. 


Today we're based at our workshop in Digbeth, Birmingham, where we've been since the early 1970s.

OUR STORY
Pouring molten pewter into a bronze mould

We work from a collection of over 1,500 antique bronze moulds, some of which are centuries old. Many were made by hand long before machine tooling existed, and we still use them today, alongside moulds and skills of our own, to produce pieces with the kind of character that mass production simply can't replicate.
